Types of Pressure Vessel Heads

Recognise the main head profiles and the information that makes each one a clear specification.

Illustrative profiles, not to scale. Use the actual section drawing to define geometry, material and dimensions.
01

Identify the geometry

Head names point to different profiles. A section drawing is the clearest starting point for comparing the shape.

  • Ellipsoidal: an elliptical crown profile; identify the intended ratio.
  • Hemispherical: a profile based on half of a sphere.
  • Torispherical: a crown with a knuckle transition.
  • Conical: a tapered component with defined end diameters and height or angle.
  • Flat or flanged-flat: a flat centre with the required edge configuration.
02

Compare the specification fields

Different shapes need different dimensions. Use the same units and make every measurement basis explicit before comparing alternatives.

  • Diameter: ID or OD.
  • Thickness: nominal or formed minimum.
  • Profile: depth, radii, height and straight flange as applicable.
  • Material, tolerances and drawing revision.
03

Keep shape and design responsibility separate

The name of a head does not establish a vessel pressure rating, material suitability or certification. The responsible project engineer must connect the component to the applicable design conditions and requirements.

04

Choose your next step

Use the product collection for the shape you need, or prepare a drawing-based enquiry when the profile still needs discussion.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you enquire.

Can I select a head from its name alone?

Use the name to identify a starting point, then confirm the geometry, dimensions, material and applicable project requirements on the drawing.
