Measuring Tank Heads: ID, OD & Straight Flange

Give every dimension a clear reference, unit and drawing revision.

Illustrative head-dimension referenceA schematic section distinguishes inside and outside diameter, crown depth h, overall height H and straight flange SF. No numerical dimensions, wall thickness, ratio or tolerances are specified.ODIDhHSFIllustrative section — not to scaleAdd mm or in to every numerical drawing value.
OD: outside diameter. ID: inside diameter. h: crown depth; H: overall height; SF: straight flange. The illustrated datums describe this schematic only. Your drawing defines the measurement surfaces and limits; line spacing is not a thickness value.
01

State whether the diameter is ID or OD

ID identifies an inside diameter; OD identifies an outside diameter. Label the basis next to the value so it is not inferred from a photograph or title.

  • Write the measurement basis explicitly.
  • State mm, in or the project unit.
  • Keep the original value and unit when communicating a drawing.
02

Separate depth, total height and straight flange

These dimensions describe different parts of the profile. Show the measurement limits on the section drawing instead of combining them into one “height” value.

  • Crown depth.
  • Overall height.
  • Straight-flange dimension.
  • Crown and knuckle radii, where applicable.
03

Define the thickness basis

Nominal plate thickness and a minimum thickness after forming are different requirements. State the intended basis and any acceptance criteria on the drawing.

04

Check the drawing package

Use one clear revision for the enquiry and identify any dimensions still open for discussion.

  • Part or drawing reference and revision.
  • Material specification and grade.
  • Dimensions, units and tolerances.
  • Quantity and required inspection documents.
USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you enquire.

Can I send dimensions in inches?

State the unit with each dimension and keep it consistent with the drawing. If different units appear, identify them explicitly rather than silently converting or overwriting values.

What should I do if the thickness basis is unknown?

Mark it as a question for technical review. Do not use zero or substitute an assumed nominal thickness.
