Conical Heads

Head geometry & specificationDimensions guide
Conical head with an open end

A conical requirement can involve different openings, transitions and edge details. Identify the actual component rather than relying on the word “cone” alone.

Technical specification information

Specifications to confirm

Keep the large-end and small-end diameters separate. State how the cone height and angle are measured.

  • Large-end diameter and ID or OD basis.
  • Small-end diameter and ID or OD basis.
  • Axial height or clearly defined cone angle.
  • Thickness, units, tolerances and edge details.

General Notes

  • Concentric or eccentric geometry, where specified.
  • Open ends, closed tip or transition detail.
  • Straight edges, flanges and any blend radii shown on the drawing.

Include the material designation and the required thickness basis. A thickness appearing in an individual product example is not a range for every conical requirement.

  • Material specification and grade.
  • Nominal or formed minimum thickness.
  • Required inspection and supply documents.

The project drawing and responsible engineer define the vessel or system design. Confirm the scope for the actual component before ordering.

Standards

Identify the applicable design, geometry, material and inspection standards and their editions. A similar head profile does not by itself establish compliance with a standard or certification requirement.

Application

Describe the intended vessel or tank service, medium and design conditions. Confirm the suitability of the head profile, material and supply requirements with the responsible project engineer.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you enquire.

Is one diameter enough for a conical-head enquiry?

Usually the large and small ends need to be identified separately, together with height or a clearly defined angle and the thickness basis.

Read the main guide →
How should an angle be shown?

Show its reference on the drawing—for example, whether it is an included angle or an angle to the axis. Do not leave the interpretation implicit.
