Ellipsoidal Heads

Head geometry & specificationDimensions guide
Ellipsoidal head examples

Ellipsoidal heads use an elliptical crown profile. The words “elliptical” and “ellipsoidal” can appear in the same buying conversation; the drawing must still identify the intended geometry.

Technical specification information

Specifications to confirm

A diameter alone does not define the head. Specify its measurement basis and the remaining profile dimensions.

  • Inside diameter or outside diameter, with units.
  • Crown depth, overall height and straight flange as separate dimensions.
  • Nominal plate thickness or the required minimum thickness after forming.
  • Tolerances and drawing revision.

General Notes

  • Identify the required profile or ratio.
  • Do not assume that every elliptical head is a 2:1 design.
  • State the relevant geometry standard and edition when one is specified.

Include the complete material designation and the requirements shown on your drawing. Forming, any subsequent processing and inspection need to be considered with the material and geometry.

  • Material grade and applicable material specification.
  • Surface and edge requirements, where relevant.
  • Required inspection records and material documents.

The project drawing and responsible engineer define the vessel or system design. Confirm the scope for the actual component before ordering.

Standards

Identify the applicable design, geometry, material and inspection standards and their editions. A similar head profile does not by itself establish compliance with a standard or certification requirement.

Application

Describe the intended vessel or tank service, medium and design conditions. Confirm the suitability of the head profile, material and supply requirements with the responsible project engineer.

Stainless steel elliptical-head requirements

Bring the elliptical profile together with the complete material designation, thickness basis, surface requirements and drawing revision. A photograph illustrates the profile; material identity must be established from the specification and records.

Review the stainless steel requirement checklist before preparing the enquiry. Confirm the actual grade-and-shape combination rather than extending one catalogue example to every requirement.

Preparing your SIDA enquiry

Share the quantity and the specification you have. If a dimension or material detail still needs discussion, identify it in your enquiry rather than entering an assumed value.

Request a quotation or review the quotation preparation guide.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you enquire.

Are all ellipsoidal heads 2:1?

No. A 2:1 ellipsoidal head is a particular geometry. Confirm the required profile, dimensions and applicable standard on the drawing.

Should I specify ID or OD?

State whether your diameter is an inside or outside measurement. Include the units and thickness basis so the dimensional requirement is unambiguous.
