Metal head surface examples

A stainless steel requirement still needs a defined head profile. Identify the required shape, material designation and specification together.

Technical specification information

Connect the grade to a head shape

“Stainless steel” identifies a material family, not a head geometry. State the complete grade and specification from your drawing, then choose the relevant profile information.

Profile & dimensionsHead shape, ID/OD, units, thickness basis and drawing revision

RecordsMaterial documentation, traceability and inspection requirements

A grade mentioned on a drawing or in an individual catalogue listing does not establish availability across every shape, thickness or service condition. Confirm the actual combination.

Specifications to confirm

Include the full designation—for example, a drawing requirement for 304 or 316L—rather than using “stainless steel” alone. Material specification, product form and project documents must remain consistent.

  • Required material designation and product form.
  • Material-document and traceability requirements.
  • Any project-specific service conditions for technical review.

General Notes

  • Ellipsoidal, hemispherical, dished, conical or flat-bottom profile.
  • Complete grade and material specification from the drawing.
  • Diameter and thickness with their measurement bases.

State the required surface condition and the thickness basis. A general finish description is not a substitute for a measurable drawing or acceptance requirement.

  • Nominal or formed minimum thickness.
  • Required finish and which surfaces it applies to.
  • Edge preparation and dimensional tolerances.

The project drawing and responsible engineer define the vessel or system design. Confirm the scope for the actual component before ordering.

Standards

Identify the applicable design, geometry, material and inspection standards and their editions. A similar head profile does not by itself establish compliance with a standard or certification requirement.

Application

Describe the intended vessel or tank service, medium and design conditions. Confirm the suitability of the head profile, material and supply requirements with the responsible project engineer.

Preparing your SIDA enquiry

Choose the relevant shape information, then share the material, quantity and drawing revision. Material and geometry requirements will need to be reviewed as a complete combination.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you enquire.

Can I enquire before selecting the final grade?

Yes. Explain the application inputs and the material question that remains open. The final material requirement needs project-specific technical confirmation.

Does a grade name establish a surface finish?

No. State the finish requirement separately, including the surfaces and any acceptance criteria that matter to the project.
